The tiki bar arrived in America in the 1930s and spent the next three decades selling a particular version of the Pacific — volcanoes, outrigger canoes, carved idols, palm trees, figures against the sky. It was romanticised and invented in equal measure, but the imagery had its own internal logic and the aesthetic stuck. Those illustrated scenes ended up on everything from cocktail menus to fabric.
